Croft 19 is a meadow of wildflowers with views over the Atlantic and the coastline around the west of Lewis. A stunning and magical place, we think, where you can take a seat on one of the benches and do absolutely nothing. You could watch for wildlife, look out to sea for Whales, Dolphins, or just let your mind wander and be at ease.
Birdwatching
Many bird species either call the Islands home or visit to breed we, on the croft, offer a wide range of undisturbed habitats which makes it an ideal location for birders, and photographers to quietly observe visitors, visiting.
Crofting
At Croft 19 we are delighted to offer you a glimpse into our crofting lifestyle. Crofting is farming on a smaller scale, originally to offer subsistence to local families by allowing them to raise their own livestock and grow crops for their dependants.
Visit in Spring
Spring welcomes the birthing of lambs on the croft, if you visit during this time then you will get to witness this magical event. There is nothing more uplifting than watching the o’lambpics. Little lambs competing in various competitions, tail wagging, high jumps, mound climbing, circuit racing, and sprinting for Mum.
Visit in Summer
Summer is time for shearing, separating the Ewes from their lambs to give them a much-needed haircut. Spruced up they are then re-introduced looking slimmer, cleaner, and most certainly cooler. Their lambs like all children are unimpressed.
Call of the Corncrake
One of Britain’s rarest migrant breeding birds. This extremely secretive bird hides and nests in long grassland, its rasping call will possibly be the only way to will ever know you share its company.
